National French Toast Day —
November 28, 2025
Celebrate French toast: custardy, golden slices of bread soaked in an egg‑milk batter and pan‑fried or baked — a versatile breakfast that ranges from simple to decadent.
Classic French Toast (serves 2–3)
Ingredients
- 4 large slices sturdy bread (~3/4–1" thick; brioche, challah, or sourdough)
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) milk or half‑and‑half
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
- Pinch salt
- Butter or neutral oil for cooking
- Toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, jam, whipped cream, nuts
Method (pan)
1. Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a shallow dish.
2. Heat a skillet over medium and add butter or oil.
3. Dip each bread slice 10–30 sec per side (longer for very stale or thick slices), letting excess drip.
4. Cook 2–4 min per side until golden and set (adjust heat to avoid burning). Finish in a 350°F (175°C) oven for a few minutes if needed to set thick slices.
5. Serve hot with desired toppings.
Baked French Toast Casserole (serves 6)
- Cube 1 loaf challah/brioche (8–10 cups). Whisk 6 eggs + 2 cups milk + 1/2 cup sugar + 2 tsp vanilla + 1 tsp cinnamon. Toss bread with custard, press into a buttered 9x13 pan, chill 30 min–overnight. Bake 350°F (175°C) 35–45 min until puffed and set. Serve with syrup or compote.
Variations & ideas
- Stuffed French toast: sandwich cream cheese and jam or Nutella between slices, dip, and cook.
- Savory: omit sugar/vanilla, add herbs and grated cheese; serve with bacon or sautéed mushrooms.
- Global takes: Spanish torrijas (sweetened milk, fried, often soaked in syrup), Hong Kong-style deep-fried sandwich with butter/syrup.
- Bread tips: day‑old or lightly stale bread soaks without falling apart; brioche/challah give richest results.
